Watch Sammy Hagar's Famous Friends Wish Him a Happy 70th Birthday

You only turn 70 once if you’re lucky — and few classic rockers know how to throw a party like Sammy Hagar. It’s only fitting, then, that the former Montrose and Van Halen frontman threw himself an epic bash to celebrate reaching septuagenarian status, starting with a star-studded clip of some of his best-known peers reaching out to wish him a happy birthday.

The video, which you can watch above, is being released now to help drum up anticipation for Red Til I’m Dead: Sammy Hagar’s Rock-N-Roll Birthday Party, the upcoming concert film capturing the four-day festivities that unfolded over four days at the singer’s Cabo Wabo Cantina in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico earlier this year. The movie is headed to theaters for a special one-night engagement next month; those who head out to see Red Til I’m Dead can expect to see a laundry list of Hagar’s friends on stage with him, including Eddie Money, Bob Weir, and country singer Toby Keith.

In the meantime, there are the birthday wishes to get to — starting with a quip from Alice Cooper, who’s joined by longtime manager Shep Gordon. “Sammy, I’ve learned a lot of important things in my life,” begins Cooper. “And one of them is that you’ve got to stop having birthdays, because you’re getting ancient. Totally ancient.”

As one might imagine, good-natured ribbing over a variety of topics — primarily Hagar’s advanced age — is a recurring theme. “70?” jokes former Mötley Crüe singer Vince Neil. “Jesus, I thought I was getting old.” Later, Foreigner leader Mick Jones is joined by Rick Nielsen, who wonders, “How come you never invite me to Cabo Wabo?”

Those are just a few of the stars you’ll see in the video, which rounds up an eclectic assortment of celebrities including younger acts like Maroon 5, Nickelback and even comedian Carrot Top — as well as Tommy Shaw, Don Felder, and James Hetfield. Toward the end of the clip, there’s also an appearance from Ozzy Osbourne, who wishes Hagar a happy 70th and reminds him, “I’m right behind you.”
